| Annotation | The process of population ageing in Azerbaijan since independence in 1990 is discussed, and forecasts made on population ageing and the average population age to 2020. The author contends that the country has reached demographic transition, that is, there has been a shift from high birth and death rates to lower birth and death rates. One consequence is that a large generation of pensioners may impose considerable financial burden on the country's social protection system. (RH). |
