Annotation | While ageing is an inevitable and irreversible biological process, and reflects the success in the history of public health policies and social economic development, there is a challenge in its implications towards health policy. In this paper, the author reviews the current situation for older people in Tanzania in the light of that country's Health Sector Policy document (1990). Issues relating to demographic transformation, disease from a geriatric perspective, changes in traditional values, community perceptions of older people, and the implications for achieving healthy ageing are discussed.
