Annotation | Pre-therapy techniques have their origins in person-centred counselling tradition, and first developed by Garry Prouty, a Chicago-based therapist. The focus in pre-therapy is on understanding and exploring with the person, his or her lived experience of the world, rather than offering an interpretation of the person's experience. This article outlines the principles of Pre-Therapy, the key components of which are based on the process of reflecting back to individual person and using five techniques, called "contact reflections". Examples are given on how the techniques are used in practice with people with dementia. (RH). |
