The book is arranged in eight parts, the first on growing older gives context to specific problems. Next, the care machine, on support provided by government and non-governmental organisations. Three sections follow the developing stages of ageing: staying independent; care homes (including how to prepare for entry); and hospitals (treatment, the withholding and withdrawing of medical treatment, and discharge). Part Six, on money, includes information on state benefits, pensions and insurance. Part Seven, on representation, looks at legal and financial matters regarding powers of attorney, and nursing and other care. Part Eight, on carers, describes carers' rights, and whether to become a carer or to allow oneself to be cared for by someone else. A concluding chapter covers complaints procedures. (RH). |
