AnnotationThe design and collection of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) was carried out as a collaboration between the International Centre for Health and Society at University College London, the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), the National Centre for Social Research, and the Department of Public Health and Primary Care and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge. ELSA was set up as the first longitudinal study in the UK to investigate the relationships between health, economic position and social participation of our ageing population in England; it is the study of people's quality of life for those aged 50 and beyond. This report describes and analyses data from the first wave of ELSA, focusing on: socio-demographic characteristics; socio-economic position; work and retirement; social activity; health; physical and cognitive function; and physical and social environment. There is a technical report (2007) which focuses specifically on the study's methodology and the conduct of the ELSA Wave 1 survey. (KJ/RH).
