AnnotationThe key message of this book is to listen to older people, as they know more about their lives than anyone else. The authors bring together an overview of relevant research and service development literature on the knowledge basis for working with older people. They present and discuss a range of issues that are important to the health of older people, including attitudes and ageism, the body, the environment, family and community, sexuality, money matters, safety and risk, and service user involvement and satisfaction. Much of the material presented is based on what older people themselves have written. Models of best practice are presented, and readers are actively encouraged to think through the implications of the material in respect of their own service settings. Issues suggested for further discussion include personhood, sharing and exercising power, and justice and equity. (RH).
