AnnotationAn understanding of variations in care as reported by patients is essential if the National Health Service (NHS) is to meet commitments that tackle inequalities in health. This report presents multivariate analyses of surveys carried out in 2002 and 2003 of inpatients, outpatients, accident and emergency (A&E) department patients, and users of primary care services, involving some 370,000 respondents in England who have used the services provided by 480 NHS organisations. The report shows that the experience of patients using NHS services is influenced by a number of factors including age, gender, educational status, ethnic origin, trust type, method of admission, place of residence and local deprivation, and the complex interactions between these factors. The report should therefore inform CHI and its successor organisation, the Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection (CHAI) in assessing services. (RH).
