AnnotationThis report summarises a series of five reports on promoting older people's independence and well-being, and exploring the nature of the change required from public services to achieve this. With the five reports, it sets out indicators of good performance, noting that the comprehensive performance assessment for 2005 will assess local authorities' progress and impact of activities on older people's well-being. The report summarises older people's views about what helps them live independent lives; and describes steps by some authorities to develop a strategic approach to older people's independence and well-being. It illustrates how a strong focus on independence can be extended to frail or disabled older people, for example through use of new technologies. The important role that carers can play in enabling older people to live independent lives is highlighted. The work undertaken in this report has been undertaken with the collaboration of BGOP, the Association of Directors of Social Services (ADSS), and the Local Government Association (LGA). The work on carers was undertaken with Carers UK, and that on assistive technology with Integrating Community Equipment Services (ICES). (RH).
