AnnotationThis is the fifth report in a series of five looking at ways to promote the independence and well-being of older people. It notes that around 5 million people in England currently provide support to relatives or friends in need of care; 70% of them provide care for older people. This study involved consultation with national organisations including Carers UK and the King's Fund. The study team (directed by David Browning) analysed the findings of Joint Reviews of social services carried out in England in 2002/03 about support for carers of older people. It reports on how far support for carers has progressed since the National Strategy for Carers was introduced in 1999. Case studies illustrate the findings on progress with: identification of carers; information available to carers; support and services available for carers; assessment for carers; and management arrangements. Literature reviews commissioned on effectiveness and cost-effective of support for carers, carers of older people and employment, and intranational and international comparisons are on the website, www.audit-commission.gov.uk/olderpeople (RH).
