AnnotationThis dissertation examines the photographic representation of older people in printed media in the UK, in order to ascertain how older people are represented, how well the representation matches the reality of their lives, and how well it serves them. A case study of a report from the Chesham and Amersham EPICS (Elderly Persons Integrated Care System) highlights some of the issues of a real situation which seem important on this subject. Analysis of typical images and actual representations of older people in the media point to ageist stereotyping. This is in contrast to the best work of well-known photographers, who portray their subjects' individual characteristics and capabilities. Things might change if UK pressure groups take up the issue of ageist stereotypes as has happened in the US. On a personal level, the author intends to photograph older people from a new perspective.
