AnnotationAlcohol abuse and dependence in older people are important problems, which frequently remain undetected by health services. Therefore screening instruments for alcohol abuse and dependence in older people would be useful in clinical practice. In a literature search of Medline (1966-2002) and PsychINFO (1967-2002), 7 research reports assessing the quality of screening instruments were found. The MAST-G and especially the CAGE appear appropriate (CAGE is an acronym for "Cut-down", "Annoyed", "Guilty" and "Eye-opener"). Cyr and Wartman's two questions ("Have you ever had a drinking problem?" and "When was your last drink?"), along with AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) and MAST (Michigan Audit Screening Test), do not appear appropriate in screening for alcohol abuse and dependence in older people in a clinical environment.
