AnnotationAt its Annual Conference in September 2003, the Executive Committee of the British Society of Gerontology (BSG) convened a consultative session to discuss the details and implications of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) consultation document. This submission is concerned with two key issues: the exceptional circumstances in which age discrimination in the workplace may be justified; and the proposed default retirement age of 70. The Society regrets the narrow remit of the proposed legislation, and points out that equality of opportunity for older people will only be achieved after profound cultural change and with age-inclusive policies and practices.
