AnnotationBrazil and South Africa have two of the largest non-contributory pension programmes in the developing world. This article briefly describes their programmes, with reference to the hypothesis that the implementation of well-designed and sustainable non-contributory pension programmes in developing countries can reduce poverty and vulnerability among older people and their households, and facilitate their contribution to the development process.
