AnnotationOccupational therapy provides a way of thinking and working that enables those working with people with dementia to recognise individual skills and see beyond the label of dementia. This guide is written for anyone who is interested in working with people with dementia, and is in three sections. The first looks at ways of understanding what dementia is and who people with dementia are. The second section considers how occupational therapists can help meet the challenges that living with dementia on a daily basis brings. It considers the role of occupation in promoting well-being, to communication, assessment, activity analysis and environmental adaptation. The final part focuses on the future direction of occupational therapy in this area, and emphasises the importance of involving and working alongside carers. Tom Kitwood's (1993) person-centred approach is advocated. The author hopes that readers of her guide will be able to engage in the process of 'meaningful making' that is at the heart of occupational therapy. (RH).
