Annotation | The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD, formerly the Institute of Personnel Management) has long championed the cause of age diversity. Attention is drawn to forthcoming legislation affecting work and age: the EU Employment Directive relating to age discrimination; and a Pensions Act, following the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Green Papers, 'Simplicity, security and choice: working and saving for retirement'. The case is backed up by DWP and CIPD evidence on age discrimination, and from the perspectives of high profile employers who believe in the cost-effectiveness of age diversity. Some recommendations on good practice are presented, based on CIPD's 'Quick fact on age and employment' (updated March 2002). The CIPD believes that the whole concept of retirement needs to be rethought, with a move towards more flexible pensions, working arrangements and lifelong learning. (RH) |
