AnnotationWigan is a metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester. The purpose of the Joint Review is to provide an objective assessment of how well local people are being served by their social services, and to make a constructive contribution towards the further improvement of services provided. Most people in Wigan were found to be well served by social services, and with promising prospects of the future. The report notes that Wigan performs well in providing support that enables older people to live at home. The Council is committed to working closely with carers and to respond to their needs. Examples of good practice include; engaging with service users in the development of information; dedicated support to carers through services such as Careline (the carers' helpline), the Carers Centre, and Wigan and Leigh Crossroads Scheme; directly provided services for older people with mental health needs; and learning from the experience of service users, for example through an Over 50s Forum. Priorities for action identified by the review include: ensuring timely support for all service users; and promoting the development of local services to meet current supply gaps (e.g. specialist provision for older people with mental health needs).
