AnnotationThe "nutcracker generation" expresses how it feels for today's parents to be in the middle of conflicting intergenerational pressures. This article outlines examples of conflicting ties and responsibilities in family relationships, and the role of grandparents and grandparenting in helping to raise grandchildren. Some research is highlighted: demographers at the Thomas Coram Research Unit of the University of London are looking at the "pivot generation" (those aged between 50 and retirement), while the Oxford Institute of Ageing is considering the decline of the extended family.
