AnnotationThe study uses 1996 census micro-data to examine the living arrangements of older women aged 60+ in 10 districts of Lesotho, and found that about 50% of these women were aged 60-69 years. Most of these women had received only primary education, and many were widows. The vast majority lived in rural areas and had no formal employment, while they were more likely to live relatively smaller households. Although the extended family system still held sway, more women were living alone or living with grandchildren. The multivariate findings revealed that women from 6 districts might have need of care and support, while only 4 districts might have adult kin to provide assistance. As there were no clear signs of the processes characterising it, the modernisation theory could not be validated. (RH).
