AnnotationIn this cross-sectional survey, 609 community-dwelling Canadian women aged 55-93 (mean age 70) attending outpatient medical clinics in Montreal were invited to complete a questionnaire on their health priorities and perceptions of care. Mismatches between the care that women desired and the care they perceived to be receiving were identified. Predictors of unmet priorities were evaluated. In general, respondents were more concerned about preventing disability than with developing certain diseases later in life. Women prioritised feeling valued in the health care relationship and having their health care providers see them as a whole person. Deficiencies in dealing with memory loss, preserving mobility and function, and treating urinary incontinence were highlighted. The women reported that less than half of health care providers gave counselling on exercise and nutrition; and only 20% of physicians screened for depression and discussed end-of-life care. Women aged 75+ were less likely to perceive that their priorities were unmet compared with women aged 55-74. Women aged 55-74 should especially be targeted for interventions to prevent disability in later life. (RH).
