AnnotationWhile older people's life expectancy has lengthened due to improved public health and medical intervention, the importance of health-related quality of life in later life has also increased. However, the application of a generic health-related quality of life measure for older people needs to be validated carefully. The practicality, reliability, validity and responsiveness for people aged 65 of the World Health Organization Quality of Life brief version (WHOQOL-BREF) was evaluated with 1,200 community-dwelling older Taiwanese. The average length of time for completing the questionnaire was 10.6 mins (self-administration) and 15.3 mins (personal interview). The score distribution in each domain was symmetrical with no floor or ceiling effect. All domain scores indicated excellent discriminant validity, construct validity and responsiveness, as well as good internal consistency and intra- and inter-observer test-retest reliabilities. Nonetheless, two items related to work activity and sexual activity had highest missing values and poor inter-observer test-retest reliabilities. With a few modifications, the WHOQOL-BREF is a suitable health-related quality of life instrument for older people. (RH).
