AnnotationCognitive impairment is associated with functional impairment in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although behavioural disturbance is very common in these patients, its association with functional status (after taking account of cognitive impairment) is not well researched. 579 patients referred for AD at 16 French hospitals were evaluated and diagnosed with possible or probable AD. These patients were assessed with the NeuroPsychiatric Inventory (NPI), cognitive subscales of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-cog), Clinical Dementia Rating scale (CDR) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale (IADL). The results from using these indicate that behavioural disturbance did not explain loss of autonomy for activities of daily living (ADLs) in AD patients. (RH).
