AnnotationIn February 1998, President Clinton made a commitment on behalf of the US government to work toward the elimination of health disparities in racial and ethnic minority populations by 2010. The authors argue that this "call to arms" requires a better understanding of the current health problems experienced by America's major racial and ethnic groups. Racial and ethnic differences in mortality are one measure of health status that points to pervasive health disparities among older Americans. This article examines some of the health differences that segment the lives of the major racial and ethnic groups. Some of the challenges in understanding health disparities at a population level are reviewed, and some suggestions are offered in response to the lack of clarity about this problem. (RH).
