AnnotationThis brief article charts the progress of palliative care and its development since 1967, when the founding of St Christopher's by Dame Cicely Saunders occurred. Thirty years later and there are seven academic departments of palliative medicine, as well as specialist palliative care units. The main challenge at present facing doctors, is one of their relation to the question of truthfulness with their patients. The author exhorts that the fourth decade of palliative care must not be dominated by routine and bureaucracy but characterised by innovation. (KJ).
