Annotation | Although one's home may be endowed with memories and meanings, increasing numbers of people aged 65+ are changing their place of residence and/or community in search of an alternative lifestyle. One type of community attracting considerable interest is the retirement village. In the last ten years, New Zealand has witnessed a rapid increase in the numbers of such communities designed to provide an idyllic and hassle-free lifestyle in a clean, well-maintained and secure environment. Despite the 'relatively trouble-free existence' that is supposedly associated with these purpose built environments, there are a number of social, economic and political issues that warrant further comment. After all, retirement villages are more than just a place to live. (RH). |
