Annotation | The Registered Nursing Care Contribution (RNCC) was introduced in 2001, to determine the amount of NHS-funded registered nursing care that residents in homes need. Part I of this 3-part review, "The Registered Nursing Care Contribution tool: an evaluation of use", presents the findings of a study by the Centre for Care of Older People, University of Northumbria. The results of using the Minimum Data Set (MDS), a well-validated tool were compared with the RNCC tool for 186 residents from 6 care homes. Comparison was also made between RNCC results when people with different backgrounds and experience used the tool. Part II, "Flexible skills mix: a model of staffing for a new care development", was carried out at Bedford Court, a new mixed development built by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF). The project used the MDS-RUG-III scales to determine the amount of time and level of staff required for individualised care planning. This was translated into a model for flexible staffing that challenges the notion of a statutory staffing notice. Part III, "The specialist nurse project: enhancing the quality of residents' care", uses the MDS cognitive scale to determine those people in need of specialist dementia care. The project's specialist nurse was one with mental health and dementia qualification and experience. (RH). |
