AnnotationThis is the fifteenth volume in a series on the broad topic of 'societal impact on ageing', and is the edited proceedings of a conference held at Pennsylvania State University in October 2001, originating from deliberations of a subcommittee of the US Social Science Research Council's Committee on Life Course Perspectives. There have been marked changes in technology over the adult life span of today's older people. Such developments have many beneficial effects, but they also leave the older generation at some disadvantage, as their life experience has not prepared them for the full use of modern technology. Contributions to this volume examine three themes, the first of which concerns human factors (e.g. sensory and cognitive) in technology design. The second theme relates to communications technology (including the impact of the Internet) and other assistive devices that might compensate for the sensory and cognitive losses associated with normal ageing. Final contributions examine the impact of everyday technology on the home environment, independent living, and older people's quality of life and health. (RH).
