AnnotationMany guidelines and opinion articles on depression and the behavioural symptoms associated with dementia have been published. This review includes only those studies providing outcome data on the assessment and management of depression or behavioural symptoms. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are reviewed. For each condition, the review presents data first on assessment and then on treatment. Comments are made on the strengths and weaknesses of the data, with suggestions for future research. Studies are presented in the order of strength of design, rather than by positive or negative findings. While there are sufficient data to formulate an evidence-based approach in treatment of depression and behavioural symptoms, more research is needed to prioritise treatments. (RH).
