AnnotationRandomised evidence on the efficacy and safety of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in depressed older people is sparse. Of the 121 studies included in the review process, only four provided randomised evidence. Therefore, major questions on the efficacy and safety of ECT in depressed older people cannot be answered with sufficient reliability. ECT seems to be effective in the acute treatment of depression in older people and is generally safe. However, important questions on the efficacy of ECT over antidepressants, the long-term efficacy, the efficacy in sub-groups of depressed older people, and the possible (long-term) cognitive effects of ECT need to be studied further.
