Annotation | Although it is sometimes thought that attitudes of older people tend to be fixed in the time of their youth, a study at the University of Southampton found that this was not the case. A comparison of grandparents' attitudes to the environment with those of their younger family members showed an awareness of recent problems and a concern about them which was as great, and in some instances, greater than those of their student grandchildren. This article outlines the results based on a questionnaire to 101 psychology students, who also asked a parent and a grandparent to complete an identical one. Ages of participants ranged from 17 to 94 years. The study supports Erikson's theory of generativity, which suggests that concern for the welfare of future generations comes about in later life.
