AnnotationA population decrease is predicted for most European countries during the period 2000-2020. At the same time, the population structure is also likely to change, with fertility below natural replacement level, and increasing life expectancy. At present, Italy's over 65 population amounts to 18.2% of the total, but is expected to reach almost 24% by 2020. The recent continuous increase in women's participation in paid work has resulted in a profound change in the previous availability of women to provide care for their older relatives. Consequently, an increasing trend to resort to employment of foreign workers has been observed in the Italian home care services sector. This article examines this trend, and the opinions of Italian caregivers about the care work provided by foreign immigrants. (RH).
