Maintaining the health of the old age traveller | Author(s) | Iain McIntosh |
Journal title | Geriatric Medicine, vol 33, no 9, September 2003 |
Pages | pp 53-54, 56-57 |
Keywords | Holidays abroad ; Health [elderly] ; Preventative medicine. |
Annotation | Given the increasing numbers of older people travelling abroad, the author reviews some of the effects foreign travel can have on older individuals. The unavoidable progressive physiological changes that can disadvantage the older traveller may involve cardiopulmonary function, respiratory response, loss in temperature regulation, and hydration and sodium metabolism. The primary care team should raise awareness of the hazards involved in travelling, endeavour to minimise the risks, and optimise protection by providing information and pre-travel screening. (RH). |
