AnnotationAbout half of all older people admitted to general hospital beds have a co-existing mental disorder. However, detection is poor, and large numbers of patients will be discharged with undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. Mental disorder is an independent predictor of poor prognosis. The author discusses the importance of early detection and vigorous treatment of the psychiatric condition for an improved outcome. (RH).
