Mental disorders in the hospitalized older patient | Author(s) | David Anderson |
Journal title | Geriatric Medicine, vol 33, no 8, August 2003 |
Pages | pp 17-19 |
Keywords | Mental disorder ; Confusion ; Diagnosis ; In-patients. |
Annotation | About half of all older people admitted to general hospital beds have a co-existing mental disorder. However, detection is poor, and large numbers of patients will be discharged with undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. Mental disorder is an independent predictor of poor prognosis. The author discusses the importance of early detection and vigorous treatment of the psychiatric condition for an improved outcome. (RH). |
