Essential ingredients of an old age psychiatry service | Author(s) | Eamonn Fottrell |
Journal title | Geriatric Medicine, vol 33, no 7, July 2003 |
Pages | pp 32-36 |
Keywords | Psychiatric treatment. |
Annotation | In the third article in his series on old age psychiatry, the author discusses core elements of a successful old age psychiatric service. He believes that unless these ingredients are present, the service will tend to flounder. These ingredients are: a committed psychiatric team; a community-orientated multidisciplinary team comprising community psychiatric nurses (CPNs) and liaison social workers; enhanced provision for respite care; an acute old age psychiatric unit; a multi-functional NHS old age psychiatric nursing home; and rapport between health and social services teams. Such a mental health care strategy would be in accord with the principles and practices of the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF). (RH). |
