AnnotationDLA's survey of UK care providers in the private sector was carried out almost exactly one year after the Care Standards Act 2000 had come into operation. The National Care Standards Commission (NCSC) in England, the Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales (CSIW), and the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care are responsible for monitoring and regulating activity under the Act. Given that 85% of this survey's respondents are based in England, this report concentrates NCSC's activities. The report attempts to present a balanced view of the regulatory process. It outlines opinions on, and the length of, the inspection process. It comments on the NCSC's first annual report, published in September 2003, when only 42% of its inspections had been completed. Comparisons are made with the field's other major information provider, Laing & Buisson. DLA makes recommendations on how the inspection process might be improved. (RH).
