AnnotationPPI Briefing Notes clarify topical issues in pensions policy, and this one notes the decline in occupational pensions provision in the private sector. It outlines factors that are leading to employers closing defined benefit (DB) schemes, and the shift to provision of direct contribution (DC) schemes. More important, though, could be the increased perception that all pensions are risky; and if this prevents investment in private and occupational pension provision, many more people could be reliant on state pensions and benefits when they retire.
