AnnotationOn the basis of a report from the National Audit Office (NAO) on ensuring effective discharge, the Committee examined action taken by the Department of Health (DH) and the National Health Service (NHS) on their own and with local authorities and the private sector. The Committee concludes that levels of delayed discharge have reduced significantly since 1997, but that still too many older people are waiting longer in hospital than is necessary. The report discusses and makes recommendations with regard to: reducing levels of delayed discharges in the future; working together to plan effective arrangements; and addressing the shortfall in capacity and developing measures to promote independent living. The evidence includes a memorandum submitted by the Independent Healthcare Association (IHA). (RH).
