AnnotationIn April 1982, the Research Committee proposed to investigate this subject, and decided to monitor one whole week's television broadcasting: the output of all four channels over the period 28 February to 13 March 1983, taking BBC1 and Channel 4 during the first week, and ITV and BBC2 during the second week. Advice was sought from the Centre for TV Research, Leeds University and the Independent Broadcasting Authority. This brief research report presents the Committee's findings. It concludes that contrary to the general impression, British television presented the older adult in a fair and sympathetic manner, even in fictional programming. However, the appearance of older adults on television is less frequent in relation to the proportion of the population that they represent. This non-appearance may betray stereotypical attitudes on the part of television producers who consider "the elderly to be marginal, boring and of little account." (KJ/RH).
