Annotation | In 1995 a "whole system" event was held in Newcastle upon Tyne to address the question "How can we improve the well-being of older people in Newcastle upon Tyne?" Those who attended formed groups to work on particular issues and one of these was Housing. The Housing group comprised older people and housing professionals and developed its work as part of a larger programme until in 1998 it became part of a Better Government for Older People (BGOP) pilot project. The Group decided to take a practical approach in which they would work together on adapting an older property in Newcastle City into a "house for life". This house would then be a "show house" for a limited period to allow people to visit and comment. The project was undertaken and this report details progress of the Housing Group until the project has ended. Some of the recommendations made by the groups and visitors to the show house, before it was allocated to senior tenants, have also been taken on board by the City's council. (KJ). |
