AnnotationThe Family Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation (Family FIRO) model can be used in understanding family relationship patterns in family-centred care interventions for people with ALzheimer's disease (AD). Understanding family interaction processes can inform the development of practice models where the family serves as a central contextual influence in the treatment process. The Family FIRO model has three core dimensions - inclusion, control and affection - which identify needs of family members, organize the complexities of family interaction patterns, and serve to sequence family issues. The author summarises previously published research to support the application of the model to a family member with Alzheimer's disease. Implications for occupational therapy practice are suggested.
