Annotation | Nine years after the initial approval of a cholinergic drug for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the US, a compound with a different pharmacological approach, namely the NMDA (N-methyl D-aspartate) antagonist memantine, has been approved for the first time in Europe in 2002. This supplement of the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry presents seven papers presented at the Memantine Workshop, which relate to the use of memantine in the treatment of dementia.
