AnnotationThis review examines how public policy discriminates, directly and indirectly, on the grounds of age in seven specific areas: education, employment, health care, social care, social security, transport, and citizenship and representation. It discovers clear evidence of direct discrimination in our national institutions; and it explores the impact of direct or indirect discrimination on older people themselves and on society as a whole. While the conclusions offer general remarks on ageing as a rationing device, and how older people are stereotyped or marginalised, a growing awareness of the existence of ageism is detected with efforts being made to combat this barrier to older people's inclusion in civil society.
