Annotation | In October 2000, the British Gas Help the Aged Partnership launched a campaign to combat isolation and loneliness amongst older people. Help the Aged commissioned Leeds Metropolitan University to carry out the research for this report, to identify practical solutions to alleviate isolation and loneliness among older people, and to offer recommendations for future policy development. The report gives findings of a systematic review and survey on loneliness and isolation. Findings are reported in terms of older people's experiences, and how supporting social networks or increasing independence can prevent isolation and loneliness. The connection between low income and poor health is emphasised. The inserts comprise 13 case studies of projects mainly in the Northern and Yorkshire Health Region. These are: Active Age and IT for All, North Tyneside; Ageing Well and Good Companions (both Gateshead); the Archway Foundation, Rotherham; British Telecom Telephone and Visiting Befriending Service, East End Community Health Project, and West End Community Wardens (all Newcastle); Care & Repair Prevention of Falls pilot, Moor Allerton Elderly Care, and Otley Action for Older People (all Leeds); Huddersfield Deanery Project; Kirkby Malzeard & Masham Rural Community Care Project; and Wharfe Valley Community Project.
