AnnotationThe Personal Expenses Allowance is the amount of income ignored in the means test for residential and nursing home care and left available for residents to spend on other items. 46 older residents from seven residential or nursing homes located in different settings in south or south-west England took part in this qualitative study, which considered their views on, and experiences of, their weekly Personal Expenses Allowance. Findings are presented on: whether the resident received the Allowance; what was bought with it; how items are bought; and residents' financial situations. The study makes recommendations which take into account the views and experiences of residents, as well as the inadequacy of the Allowance (then £16.05 per week). (RH).
