AnnotationThe Institute of Public Care at Oxford Brookes University was commissioned to undertake this project as part of the programme of research of Friends of the Elderly. The study aims to provide information about the current and future population aged 65+ with mental health needs, and about health, social services and housing provision, also identifying service development priorities, highlighting gaps between needs and services. The study focused on 14 shire counties and 12 unitary authorities, mainly in south-east England. The report outlines national policy, describes the study design, and estimates the prevalence of dementia, depression and physical disability. The availability of specific services is discussed; and while all the authorities surveyed were working towards integration of health and social services for older people with mental health needs, some had made more progress than others.
