Annotation | Since its creation some 30 years ago, the US National Institute of Aging (NIA) has stayed true to its mission focusing on "improving the health and well being of older Americans through research". This is a commentary on the article by Robert N Butler (the first Director of the NIA), which was first published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) in 1977, and reprinted in this issue of JAGS.
