Annotation | Many older gays and lesbians may be reticent about revealing their sexuality, and thus difficult to recruit using probabilistic sampling methods. In order to find a heterogeneous and representative sample level 1 (pre-snowballing) sample, the authors decided to assess different methods of advertising their study, such as notices sent to societies for older gay men and lesbians. Each person making initial (level 1) contact was sent 5 recruitment packs for themselves and distribution to friends. Although participants were encouraged to recruit heterosexuals of similar age, the snowballing method was generally only successful in recruiting more gays and lesbians to the study. (RH). |
