Annotation | Many European countries have started to introduce reforms aimed at the sustainability of their retirement income systems. These reforms include steps to strengthen the link between pension benefits and contributions; prolonging the contribution period needed to qualify for a full pension; and diversifying sources of retirement pension provision so that private pensions play a larger role in securing adequate pension income. Most of the papers in this book were produced for a conference on the "Political Economy of Pension Reform" held at the Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IASA), Laxenburg, Austria in 2001. Contributors draw on a variety of analytical and empirical perspectives from economics and political science, to present analyses of the reform progress in Europe and Latin America, and on the role of international organisations in furthering the pension reform agenda.
