Annotation | 129 older drivers residing in Perth, Australia volunteered to participate in this study, which tested their performance on 10 assessment criteria using a driving simulator. Logistic regression analysis was then undertaken to determine those criteria that may be related to the event of incurring at least one demerit point (i.e. penalty point) during the previous 2 years. As expected, older drivers' driving skill was found to decline with age. 46 participants incurred at least one demerit point within the previous 2 years. Adjusting for age in the logistic regression, the functional abilities associated with traffic infringements were decision and judgement under pressure of time, confidence in driving and high speed, and compliance to traffic regulation. For the study sample, the simulated driver performance was shown to be reliable; and the significant association with the event of incurring a demerit point further confirmed the criterion validity of using the laboratory-based driving simulator to identify older drivers at risk of traffic infringements incurring demerit points.
