AnnotationAlthough one of the more challenging behaviours for nursing home staff to manage, research on intervention strategies for vocally disruptive behaviour (VDB) is limited. In this Australian study, nursing home residents referred to six psychogeriatric and geriatric outreach services for treatment of VDB were examined pre-treatment and followed up for 3 months by a research nurse. Of 22 residents, 4 had died after 3 months. Of the remainder, 6 had objective improvement in VDB. While no specific treatment appeared to be more effective, giving only modest reductions in VDB, nursing home staff found the outreach services provided helpful. The authors recommend use of outreach services to nursing homes in the management of challenging behaviours. (RH).
