AnnotationThe view taken by the Chief Executive of the Third Age Employment Network (TAEN) is that people should have a choice and the option to extend years of working life should be available to all. Employment should not be blocked by a lack of jobs, prejudice about older workers, or a lack of help, advice or retraining to enable the move to new areas of work. This paper examines how we might accommodate changes in patterns of work in a constructive way, which requires the involvement of employers, workers (paid and unpaid), the government, and organisations and agencies in the labour market. While the concentration is on work opportunities, this paper recognises that financial independence in retirement requires both work and saving. The appendix outlines current trends in the employment of older people. Earlier copies of this item have the title, "Work after 60 - pleasure or pain, choice or necessity?" (RH).
